Scientist have come up with a innovative storage device which is not only significantly compact than traditional blu-ray discs, but can also hold extremely large amount of data. Its the 5D optical glass disc which is developed to hold upto 360 terabytes of data. It also comes with a data storage validity of 13.8 billion years, which staggeringly high!
This stunning innovation is attributed to the researchers at university of Southampton who figured out how to store large amount of data on small glass discs with laser writing technique.
The university says that this discovery opens a new era of eternal data archiving as the discs have virtually unlimited lifetime and such an external storage system will be extremely beneficial for national archives, museums and libraries.
They are now looking for organisations or companies which will be interrested in assisting them take this innovative storage technology to the market. Dont know when it will happen but whenever this technolgy is accessible to general public we will be able to store our entire data on a single disc which can survive generations.
