Open Access in the networked world

Open Access in the networked world: experience of developing and transition countries

This session is moderated by Danica Radovanovic and Tatjana Jovanovic-Grove:

What is innovative and what is challenging regarding the usage of OA e-resources, social Web 2.0 software and media? Does science blogging in Europe (in developed and countries in transition) exist? And what are the forms? Main discussion is through interaction and different practices of participants, to find solution for the burning issue: how to overcome the problem of not-networking in scientific and edu (online) community?

In addition to each there are several reasons why situation is like that. “Locked’ archives still exist as well as people’s (in our case professionals’) behaviour / closed minds regarding OA resources (e.g. ignorance, the lack of digital & media; literacy to basic one – non-accessability).

The later is the major factor in our discussion: technology, as I wrote earlier, is not an issue but rather a system in one’s society, and all elements within. This issue is important not only for scientists, students, professors but also for online community managers. Also I’ll discuss – not/working (Dr Geert Lovink) in the networked world as crucial issue for any further activity, in opposition to Web 2.0 that presents in science and education one of the forms that helps in e-learning processes, research: collaboration.

Since we all build the content and organize it in specific ways (Clay Shirky), social media applications, OA self-archiving and collaborative building of content will be one of the topics that I’ll talk about and interact with the audience. How we can sieze the most of the free, OA content that is available on Web 2.0? As PhD researcher and lecturer of Social Web, one of the methods I practice is sharing. What servies can provide us full-text OA material and allow sharing it to our community, as social Web services that are assisting in everyday work/research?
Implications of social media literacy in OA management.

More brainstorming & ideas to come.
